Haiti Relief Efforts Wildly Successful

In General School News on January 29, 2010 at 9:51 am

The Haiti Relief Efforts spearheaded by the OVS Student Council has been more successful than anyone could have imagined. The students had raised over $500.00 at last count! The coffers were bolstered by the donation of $110.00 made by the Kindergarten class on behalf of Charlie Holmes. Charlie requested that all students who attended her birthday party make a monetary donation to the Kindergarten class in lieu of gifts. The class then chose to donate the money to the relief efforts in Haiti. Truly a remarkable group of children!

OVS Student Council to help Haiti

In General School News on January 22, 2010 at 11:43 am

The OVS Student Council has been moved by the tragic events unfolding in the tiny Caribbean nation of Haiti over the past week and have decided to help. The council have organized two fundraisers to run next week with all proceeds going to aid Haitian relief efforts. On Monday, January 25th the school will hold a Monday Morning Muffin Sale. The Student Council members are baking the muffins so that 100% of proceeds can go to the people who need it most. On Friday, January 29th they will be hosting Hot Dog Friday. Hot dogs will be selling for $2.00 each and drinks will go for $1.00. Money and order forms need to be in by Tuesday, January 26th.

Coming on the heels of a generous donation of $1000 to the Community Hall, this Student Council are distinguishing themselves by looking beyond the walls of the school building. Acting on a local and global scale is very impressive and serves as a reminder to all of us that OVS has the greatest students in the world! Congratulations to parents, grandparents, teachers and friends on helping to rear these fine young men and women. After all, “it takes an entire village to raise a child.”

Student Council Makes Big Donation!

In General School News on January 12, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Sorry ladies, you don't win a chili cook-off on good looks alone!

The OVS Student Council is pleased to announce the donation of $1000.00 to the Oakville Community Hall to help in the purchase of a new sound system. Having experienced the new sound system in the school itself, the students felt that the Hall was due for an upgrade. President Miller and the remaining council members should be lauded for their progressive approach to combining the school and the community and for their understanding of the long-term significance of the Community Hall!

The OVS students would like to thank the Oakville Community Club Endowment Fund for their generous donations to Elm River 4-H and Oakville Youth Soccer as both these great organizations provide healthy experiences for many in the student body.

Note: There is a letter coming home today in the student’s backpacks outlining a fantastic field trip for the whole school!

What is this world coming to?

In General School News on January 8, 2010 at 2:42 pm

A suspicious package was handed to the Principal at OVS this morning by an unnamed student. Upon further inspection it was deemed to be a biologically hazardous item. The school was briefly evacuated and the offending materials were properly disposed of with little damage done to the office. Pictured below the offensive items:

A dangerous gift?

If anyone has any information that would lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators of this heinous act, please contact the school immediately.

In a related story, Yolanda Yobb has been banned from all school-related activities pending the completion of an investigation into her role in the incident.

A Fire Burning Bright in Oakville!

In General School News on January 8, 2010 at 12:57 pm

The Olympic Torch came to Oakville last night and brought with it a flood of excitement and community spirit! It was one of the most spectacular events in recent memory as the world’s most famous flame (sorry Lanny McDonald) visited our humble village and was engulfed by an outpouring of passion and patriotism! More than 500 people braved the bitter cold to line the route through town and more than 300 gathered at the Community Hall afterwards as we celebrated who we are and where we come from! A huge thanks goes out to the OVS Parent Council and the Oakville Community Club for organizing such a special event and bringing so many friendly people together!

The Olympic Flame!

An unforgettable moment!

The school enjoyed their own activities throughout the day as students were treated to a pancake breakfast (organized by Ms. McLeod) that featured  a very special guest; Oakville’s own 2010 Olympic Torch bearer Candice Klaassen-Homewood! Candace shared her story throughout the day and brought some local flavour to the world’s largest international sporting event! Students then spent the day participating in a wide range of activities that included bobsleigh, biathlon and curling. A big thanks goes out to Miller Agritec Inc. for their generous donation of cutlery, plates, bowls and tablecloths that made the breakfast a big success.

Olympic spirit in action!

Candice and the OVS students!

It was a memorable day for all involved and a testament to the strength of our community! Congratulations to everyone who participated!

The world's greatest school!

The New Year Begins

In General School News on January 5, 2010 at 10:48 am

It was a quiet opening day of 2010 at OVS yesterday. I managed to visit the classrooms a couple of times each and the students looked very tired but engaged in their learning. The hardest part of the return to school for me is the Sponge Bob withdrawal! It’s a funny thing that the body adjusts to wearing pyjamas so quickly.

It’s a big week at OVS and in the community as we have a visit from the Olympic Torch on the agenda. It would appear that the Torch will be at Service on Second at 5:30 PM on Thursday. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. We have a big day of activities planned at school and around town including fireworks and a chili cook-off after the Torch leaves. The Community Club and the Parent Council have been in cahoots over this event for a couple of months so it should be lots of fun. We had arranged for OVS legend Shane Smith to perform at the Hall but some unfortunate circumstances have forced him to withdraw. As a result I’m still looking for some entertainment. Any ideas? Let me know.
